Forging Strategic Bonds: The Enduring Partnership Between Pakistan and Turkey in Defense and Development

In the realm of Islamic nations, Pakistan and Turkey stand out as formidable entities, both ranking among the top ten countries globally in terms of defense capabilities. Prior to Erdogan's tenure, Turkey struggled with a nascent defense industry, satisfying a mere 20 percent of its needs domestically. Consequently, Turkey faced challenges in combating terrorism, exacerbated by reluctance from NATO allies to provide arms support and the imposition of restrictive measures.

Throughout this period, Pakistan emerged as a steadfast ally, stepping in to fulfill Turkey's defense requirements, including the provision of essential ammunition during critical moments such as the Cyprus conflict. This unwavering support forged a deep bond between the two nations, exemplified by the heartfelt gratitude expressed by Turkish officials and citizens towards Pakistan.

The relationship between Pakistan and Turkey transcended mere military cooperation, extending to mutual admiration and cultural exchange. Pakistani pilots, renowned for their expertise, played a pivotal role in training Turkish counterparts, earning accolades from dignitaries like Turgut Özal, who spearheaded economic reforms in Turkey, influenced by Pakistan's progress.

Despite subsequent periods of political instability in Turkey, the ascendance of Erdogan heralded a renewed focus on development, with the nation's defense industry evolving rapidly to achieve self-sufficiency. Today, Turkey stands poised to meet its defense needs entirely through indigenous resources, positioning itself as a global leader in defense technology.

The camaraderie between Pakistan and Turkey endures, with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif's administration prioritizing efforts to bolster bilateral trade and defense collaboration. Joint initiatives, such as the Milgem project, underscore the depth of cooperation, with Pakistan investing in Turkish defense equipment and benefiting from shared expertise.

As General Mateen Gevrak's visit to Pakistan underscores, both nations are committed to further enhancing cooperation in defense industry, with discussions centered on joint ventures and technology transfer. This synergy epitomizes the enduring friendship and solidarity between Pakistan and Turkey, paving the way for continued advancements in defense capabilities and broader strategic collaboration.

Ahsan Iqbal Unveils Economic Reform Vision for a Thriving Pakistan

In a powerful keynote address at the recent Business Summit, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Ahsan Iqbal, outlined a bold vision for reversing Pakistan’s economic slowdown and unlocking its full potential. With a blend of realism and resolve, he emphasized the urgent need for structural reforms, stability, and strategic investments to drive national progress.

A Stark Financial Reality

Minister Iqbal began by confronting the hard truths of Pakistan’s fiscal condition. He highlighted the nation’s growing dependence on loans to meet recurring expenses—an unsustainable model, especially in light of an impending $70 billion debt repayment due over the next three years. This financial strain, he noted, underscores the critical need for economic realignment.

Stability: The Foundation of Growth

At the heart of Iqbal’s message was a simple yet powerful principle: sustainable growth cannot exist without political stability and consistent policymaking. He argued that a stable environment is essential not only for internal development but also for attracting foreign investment. He projected a long-term economic vision, expressing confidence that Pakistan can become a $2 trillion economy by 2047, provided the country maintains peace, policy continuity, and institutional integrity.

Setbacks to Progress: A Cautionary Tale

Drawing attention to missed opportunities, Iqbal cited the post-2017 slowdown of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). He expressed concern over how political upheaval derailed investor confidence, particularly in the development of special economic zones (SEZs)—zones once seen as linchpins for rapid industrialization and job creation.

Reigniting Investor Confidence

Despite setbacks, Iqbal acknowledged recent progress, especially the formation of the Special Facilitation Council, designed to streamline investment procedures and foster a more business-friendly climate. He emphasized that Pakistan’s economic future depends heavily on scaling up exports—targeting $100 billion in exports within the next 7–8 years—to reduce reliance on debt and boost foreign reserves.

A Blueprint for Revival

Laying out a comprehensive economic roadmap, Iqbal stressed the importance of large-scale investment in five core sectors:

  • Agriculture
  • Industry
  • Minerals
  • Energy
  • Information Technology

He praised ongoing collaboration between the government, international partners, and the private sector, viewing these partnerships as critical drivers of innovation, infrastructure, and growth.

Reforming for a Fairer System

In his call for inclusive development, Iqbal urged the government to eliminate excessive regulations that hinder entrepreneurship and breed inefficiency. He advocated for a more equitable tax structure, suggesting that higher-income groups should shoulder a fairer share of the tax burden. Additionally, he emphasized the need to cut down on non-essential perks and expenditures enjoyed by elite bureaucrats and officials.

A Vision Within Reach

With clear-eyed honesty and a future-focused strategy, Ahsan Iqbal’s address reflected both the challenges and the immense potential of Pakistan’s economy. His message was clear: With political will, structural reforms, and unwavering focus, Pakistan can overcome its fiscal challenges and embark on a journey toward lasting prosperity.

Baluchistan Government Establishes Investment Facilitation Center in Islamabad

The Government of Baluchistan has taken a significant step towards economic development by establishing an investment facilitation center in Islamabad, aimed at attracting both local and international investors. Similar centers are also planned in Karachi and Gwadar, marking a strategic effort to boost industrial, commercial, and tourism sectors in the province.

A Vision for Economic Growth

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan, this initiative is expected to play a crucial role in Baluchistan’s progress. The federal government is also expected to support the success of this project by ensuring smooth operations and policy backing.

Key Services and Investor Benefits

The facility centers will provide a wide range of investment incentives and support services, including:
Visa assistance for foreign investors
Security and No Objection Certificates (NOC)
Business registration and licensing
Travel facilitation for business visits

The Baluchistan Board of Investment and Trade (BBOIT)—the first of its kind in Pakistan—will oversee these initiatives, ensuring efficient investor engagement and representation in high-level discussions, including those with foreign delegations.

Collaboration with Key Federal Agencies

The Islamabad facilitation center will help foster close working relationships with important federal bodies, such as:

  • CPEC Authority (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor)
  • Federal Board of Investment
  • Ministry of Commerce & Industry

A Much-Needed Initiative for Sustainable Development

Had similar measures been implemented earlier, Baluchistan could have achieved remarkable economic milestones. Moving forward, it is essential to establish long-term investment policies that can be carried forward by future governments to ensure sustained economic growth and regional stability.

Final Thoughts

This investment initiative reflects a new era of economic potential for Baluchistan, bringing opportunities for investors while accelerating the province’s development. By creating a business-friendly environment, Baluchistan is positioning itself as a key player in Pakistan’s economic future.
