On
the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, President Volodymyr
Zelensky offered words of encouragement as his country remained on edge.
Zelensky declared 2023 as the year of Ukraine's triumph over Russia and
expressed confidence in his nation's ability to defend itself, though he refrained
from predicting an end to the fighting.
Global
leaders echoed Zelensky's hopeful message by releasing statements in support of
Ukraine. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin announced that China
is willing to play a constructive role in resolving issues between Ukraine and
Russia, though he did not provide specifics on how this would be accomplished.
Russia's Foreign Ministry expressed appreciation for the proposal and laid
blame for the lack of negotiations on Ukraine and the West.
Despite
these diplomatic efforts, shelling by Russian forces continues, resulting in
the deaths of three civilians and injuries to several others. Local authorities
report damage to the heating system in the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson
due to shelling, leaving residents without heat for several days.
The
European Union, the United States, Japan, and the United Kingdom have all
approved new rounds of sanctions against Russia, with US Secretary of State
Antony Blinken announcing additional tariffs, visa restrictions, and sanctions.
Germany, Poland, and Sweden have pledged military support for Ukraine,
including the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks.
Meanwhile,
the White House reports that Russia and Iran are deepening their military
cooperation, with Russia potentially providing fighter jets to Iran.
