The visit of Russian
Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Pakistan on Tuesday, accompanied by a
delegation, marks a significant development in the bilateral relations between
Islamabad and Moscow. This visit has witnessed meetings, sideline talks, and
contacts at various levels during international gatherings, showcasing a
growing coordination between the two countries. Notably, both countries have
played crucial roles in the Afghan peace process and demonstrated alignment in
international forums.
Pakistan's Foreign
Minister, Shah Mahmoud Qureshi, described the Russian Foreign Minister's visit
after nine years as a "new aspect of bilateral relations,"
emphasizing Islamabad's high regard for its relations with Moscow as they
steadily expand. The Russian Foreign Minister, in a statement, acknowledged
Pakistan's importance as an important partner in Russia's foreign policy,
citing fruitful contacts in international organizations like the United Nations
and its specialized agencies. The statement further highlighted that
cooperation between the two nations is based on strategic stability and
counter-terrorism, with a shared position on most issues.
In an interview with
The News, the Russian Foreign Minister reiterated that Pakistan and Russia are
in favor of resolving disputes in accordance with the UN Charter. Russia, being
a key member of the international community and a permanent member of the UN
Security Council, can play a pivotal role in addressing rapidly changing global
issues, including the Afghan peace process and the Kashmir issue. The Russian
Foreign Minister lauded Pakistan's role in the reconciliation process in
Afghanistan and highlighted the significant increase in Pak-Russia trade volume
by 46% to $7.9 billion, indicating the growing economic ties between the two
countries.
The resumption of peace
efforts in Afghanistan is of paramount interest to regional and global peace,
and Pakistan has been actively working towards this goal. The recent Troika on
Afghanistan meeting held on March 18, where Pakistan played an active role, is
expected to strengthen the intra-Afghan dialogue. Although challenges remain in
expanding and making the Afghan dialogue process fruitful, the situation is not
discouraging. The Russian delegation also held meetings with senior civil and
military leaders in Pakistan, including General Qamar Javed Bajwa, and called
on the Sindh Chief Minister to review the modernization of steel mills.
Furthermore, talks are
underway on the reconstruction of Pakistan's energy and railway systems, along
with discussions on the supply of Russian civil aircraft. Both countries are
also addressing concerns arising from the COVID-19 pandemic. It is hoped that
the outcome of the Islamabad talks will further enhance mutual cooperation and
expand the ties between Pakistan and Russia in line with the changing demands
of the world.
