Maulana Fazlur Rehman's Presence Steals the Spotlight at U.S. Embassy Independence Day Reception

At a reception hosted by U.S. Charge d’Affaires Natalia A. Baker in Islamabad, celebrating the 249th Independence Day of the United States, the unexpected appearance of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman took many by surprise. Held well ahead of the actual date due to the upcoming month of Muharram, the event brought together prominent political leaders, diplomats, and officials from across Pakistan’s political spectrum.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman: The Unexpected Guest of Honor

As Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived—fresh from concluding a National Economic Council meeting—he was greeted by a formal salute from a U.S. Air Force contingent. But all eyes quickly turned to Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who was seated in the front row among the special guests, right next to the main rostrum.

The Prime Minister warmly acknowledged the Maulana with a friendly handshake and exchanged a few light-hearted words before taking his place at the podium. Rehman's presence sparked immediate curiosity and admiration from guests and diplomats alike, becoming one of the most talked-about moments of the evening.

A Cultural and Diplomatic Showcase

Adding to the ambiance, Natalia A. Baker made a distinct impression by arriving in a light almond-colored gharara, a nod to Pakistani culture. Her outfit, while sparking playful debate among Western diplomats—some insisting it resembled a European design—highlighted her ongoing efforts to engage meaningfully with local traditions. Baker recently made headlines for her enthusiastic support of the Lahore Qalandars during the Pakistan Super League, earning her notable popularity.

A Strong Political Turnout, With PML-N Leading the Way

In terms of political representation, PML-N had the largest presence, reflecting the party's strong ties with the diplomatic community. Guests from PPP and PTI were also in attendance, albeit in smaller numbers. Despite strict security arrangements, the embassy team ensured a smooth and welcoming experience for all attendees.

A Unique Diplomatic Ceremony

Breaking from tradition, both Pakistan and U.S. national anthems were performed live. A female U.S. embassy official sang Pakistan’s anthem, while her male counterpart performed the American anthem, symbolizing mutual respect and shared values.

During his speech, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended heartfelt congratulations to the United States and praised President Donald Trump for his commitment to peace in the region—particularly in light of recent tensions with India. He acknowledged Trump's diplomatic role in supporting the Pakistan-India ceasefire, calling it a step toward sustainable peace in South Asia.

The Prime Minister also requested Natalia Baker to personally convey his gratitude to President Trump for his efforts. In response, Baker, smiling graciously, placed her hand on her chest and assured the Prime Minister that she would deliver his message.
