Protection and Conservation of Environment

An animal or plant species that no longer exists anywhere on earth is considered extinct and cannot be replaced. Numerous living organisms are at risk of extinction due to their low population numbers, making them endangered without special protection. The endangerment of a species eventually leads to their extinction, as exemplified by the Bengal tiger, mountain gorilla, and panda, among others. In Pakistan, species such as the wooly flying squirrel, snow leopard, and falcon are currently endangered.

Wildlife refers to the variety of living organisms in their natural habitats. Over the years, wildlife populations have decreased significantly due to human activities, such as deforestation for new roads, farms, and cities, as well as the use of pesticides. Environmental pollution has reached an alarming level in some countries, necessitating the implementation of bioremediation techniques to remove toxic materials using living organisms. Algae, for example, have been found to be effective in reducing pollution from heavy metals.

Pakistan is experiencing significant environmental challenges, such as the threat to aquatic life from sewage and industrial waste, particularly affecting fish populations. Noise pollution is also a problem in major cities like Karachi, Lahore, and Peshawar, while tannery industries have adversely affected the city of Kasur. The exhaust emissions from vehicles are adding lead to the atmosphere.

Protecting the earth's natural resources and using them prudently is known as conservation, which is essential for ensuring a sustainable future for the environment.
